Eco-Warriors at Work: Gift Market’s Beach Cleanup Adventure

On a beautiful morning on June 24th, our spirited gang of volunteers from Gift Market set out on a mission to save the day at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Armed with a bucket-load of determination, we were ready to take on the beach and make it shine like never before.

Little did we know just how eye-opening and emotional this experience would turn out to be.

Cleaning the Seabed: A Treasure Hunt Like No Other

Guess what? We weren’t actually cleaning up the usual trash from the shoreline. Thanks to a rare low tide, a part of the seabed was exposed, and we couldn’t resist the chance to dive in (not literally, of course) and dig up the hidden gems.

It was like a treasure hunt, except the treasure was piles of plastic straws, food packaging, and all sorts of other rubbish that didn’t belong down there.

Life in Plastic isn’t All Fantastic

As the sun got hotter, our shoes got dirtier, and exhaustion started creeping in, something struck us hard. The sheer amount of plastic waste we were uncovering was mind-boggling.

Plastic straws poking out of the sand, food containers buried beneath the surface—it was a stark reminder of the ugly side of our plastic-infested world. Seeing these unrecyclable plastics choking our beach was an emotional gut-punch that fueled our determination to keep on picking the trash, despite the sweltering weather.

Embracing Sustainability: It’s Time to Walk the Talk!

Here at Gift Market, we’re all about championing sustainability. We thought we were doing a good job with our range of recycled and eco-friendly gifts. But that day at the beach? It hit us right in the feels.

We realised that advocating for sustainability is not just about selling products; it’s about making a real difference in the world around us. It’s about choosing eco-friendly alternatives whenever we can and inspiring others to join the movement.

During the post-event reflection session with the organiser, Green Nudge, it’s clear that most of us would do our best to avoid plastic consumption as much as we can.

How you can make a difference the next time you’re at the beach with your family.

The Final Straw

According to Access Partnership, an estimated 2.2 million straws are used each day in Singapore. And about 900 million kilograms of plastic is discarded each year. That’s a lot of straw and plastic!

Let us work towards the final straw by choosing eco-friendly and sustainable gifts the next time you choose a gift for your clients.

It may be a small gift but every step counts!

Whether it’s food containers, collapsible cups or even pens, we are proud to offer greener alternatives to these gifts.

Our beach clean-up adventure at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal was an emotional rollercoaster, filled with shocking discoveries and heartfelt determination. We’ve realised that saving our seas is not just a tagline; it’s a mission that requires each one of us to step up and make a change.
